The myth of the American West with its roots in 19th century creationism, nationalism and manifest destiny was depicted and perpetuated in the monumental western landscape. This idealized pictorial history lingers in cultural memory. But its connection to how we see and experience the natural world today is ambiguous. Why do we still want to believe in it?
